Dr. Dawn Wright

American geographer and oceanographer

Dr. Dawn Wright is a prominent American geographer and oceanographer, known for her expertise in applying Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to marine science. She is the Chief Scientist of Esri, a leading GIS software company, and a Professor of Geography and Oceanography at Oregon State University. Wright is also a deep-sea explorer, having been the first Black person to dive to the Challenger Deep, the deepest point on Earth.

Join Us!

Join us for a special day with Dr. Dawn Wright, oceanographer, explorer, and history-maker, and Inland Empire resident, as she shares the story behind Mapping the Deep.

Hosted by Black Voice News in partnership with Downtowne Bookstore, this event will feature an engaging talk by Dr. Wright about her record-breaking dive to Challenger Deep—the deepest part of the ocean—and the mission that drives her work: unveiling the mysteries of the ocean floor. Guests will gain insight into the technology, perseverance, and purpose behind one of the most challenging scientific frontiers of our time.

Books will be available for purchase on site, and attendees will have the opportunity to get their copy signed by Dr. Wright herself. Whether you're passionate about science, adventure, or stories of Black excellence and leadership, this is an event you won’t want to miss.

Come bring yourself and your family to be inspired by a living pioneer whose work is changing the way we see—and map—our planet.
